One of the major features of CloudFlare is that its traffic pipe is very large and distributed all over the world.
This means that if your website receives a large amount of traffic for a short period of time, even if it is a DDoS attack, CloudFlare will protect your website and it will remain up and functional.
In fact, it is highly recommended that you enable CloudFlare if you expect a large increase in the traffic towards your website (e.g. if you are running a marketing campaign, you are having your site featured on a popular blog, etc).
NOTE: You have to sign-up for CloudFlare Business Plan if you want your site to be protected against attacks.
